Looking Forward to the Future of BIM Technology

Mon Apr 22, 2019

In its report, Global BIM Market: Size, Trends, and Forecasts (2016-2020), Daedal Research stated that the global building information market (BIM) is slated to grow to $8 billion by 2020.

Be it a growing number of countries mandating BIM to the industry adopting it as a best practice, independent software vendors (ISVs) have an opportunity to tap into a burgeoning market.

In this post, we look at the trends driving BIM adoption worldwide.

Countries with AEC BIM Mandates

A Growing Number of Governments are Mandating BIM

From Europe and North America to Australia, East Asia, and the Middle East, more governments are mandating BIM, at least as a requirement for public infrastructure or construction projects.

Notable initiatives include the EU BIM Task Group, which is building a set of “common principles for [governments] to consider when introducing BIM to their public works or strategies.” Another is the General Services Administration (GSA), which led BIM in all US public sector projects.

Today, the worldwide leaders of BIM adoption include the UK, Singapore, France, Germany, the United States, China, Middle East, Brazil, and Australia.

How BIM is used in AEC Industry Today

The AEC Industry is Adopting BIM as a Best Practice

The architecture, engineering, and construction (AEC) industry also increasingly adopting BIM as a best practice. For AEC, the benefits of BIM do not stop at the fact that it offers visualization, but the underlying information or meta-data that you can include in BIM.

Reduce Risk of Delays & Cost Overruns

These benefits translate into reduced project error, reduced time for communication between different teams as well as increased client satisfaction, project visibility, and input.

For example, BIM enables MEP engineers to detect clashes, for example, if ductwork interferes with the plumbing. If AEC contractors miss these clashes in the design stage, then these issues may arise midway during construction, thus causing delays and cost overruns.

With BIM, MEP engineers can identify these clashes during the design stage and fix them well before the design enters actual construction.

Design for Energy Efficiency

With the growing adoption of LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) worldwide, HVAC designers can use BIM to satisfy LEED’s Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ) and Energy and Atmosphere (EA) requirements.

For example, they can examine the ductwork in BIM and find opportunities for lowering energy use, perhaps by moving the air diffusers to closer to the occupant.

How to Capitalize on BIM Industry Trends

Given these trends, independent software vendors (ISV) have a golden opportunity to expand their market share in the AEC space through BIM software.

However, developing the core software components of BIM, such as 3D visualization and clash detection, is difficult and time-consuming. Moreover, the AEC market relies on multiple BIM file formats, which means interoperability and file translation will be critical.

Instead of developing these components alone, ISVs would be well-served to work with existing SDKs that already provide those capabilities. This way, ISVs can reduce their time-to-market as well as focus on differentiating their products from the competition.
